Nacionalinis vėžio institutas yra valstybinis mokslinių tyrimų institutas, jo veiklą koordinuoja Švietimo, mokslo ir sporto bei Sveikatos apsaugos ministerijos.
Institutas atlieka mokslinius tyrimus ir eksperimentinę plėtrą onkologijos ir gretutinių mokslų kryptyse, padeda rengti doktorantus.
Institutas taip pat teikia aukščiausio lygio specializuotas ir individualizuotas onkologijos asmens sveikatos priežiūros paslaugas gyventojams.
Instituto vadovu (-e) tapti gali turintieji medicinos ir sveikatos, gamtos arba socialinių mokslų srities mokslo daktaro laipsnį bei ne mažiau kaip 5 metus mokslinio ir vadovaujamo darbo patirties. Kandidatams taip pat reikalinga patirtis tarptautinio lygio mokslinių tyrimų ir eksperimentinės plėtros projektuose.
