Mokyklos, kuriose dėl mažo mokinių skaičiaus nebus III gimnazijos klasės, galės išlaikyti gimnazijos statusą. Jos III gimnazijos klases galės formuoti vėlesniais metais, jei susirinks reikiamas 21 mokinio skaičius. Net ir kurį laiką neformuojant III-IV gimnazijos klasės, mokykla galės išlikti gimnazija.
Tokį paaiškinimą teikia Švietimo, mokslo ir sporto ministerija, gavusi klausimų iš savivaldybių dėl šių metų sausį įsigaliojusių Vyriausybės atnaujintų mokyklų tinklo kūrinimo taisyklių.
Sprendimus dėl gimnazijos statuso keitimo priima savivaldybės taryba. Yra ir daugišimčių, kai galima sudaryti po vieną III ir IV klasę tik po 12 mokinių:
- vienintelėje savivaldybės teritorijoje veikiančioje gimnazijoje;
- vienintelėje savivaldybės centre esančioje gimnazijoje;
- gimnazijoje tautinių mažumų kalba / kalbomis;
- gimnazijoje lietuvių kalba Vilniaus ir Šalčininkų r. savivaldybėse;
- gyvenamojoje vietovėje esančiose dviejose ar trijose gimnazijose skirtingomis mokomosiomis kalbomis;
- gimnazijos struktūriniame padalinyje (skyriuje, filiale);
- jungtinėje gimnazijoje, sudarytoje iš dviejų–trijų gimnazijų ir toliau veikiančioje savo patalpose.
Kodėl geriau, kai vienuoliktoje klasėje yra bent 21 mokinys?
Kiekvienam mokiniui, kuris mokosi pagal vidurinio ugdymo (III-IV gimnazijos klasė) programą, privaloma sudaryti individualų ugdymo planą pagal jo mokymosi galias ir mokymosi poreikius. Taip pat turi būti sudaromos laikinosios grupės mokymo procesui diferencijuoti. Paskaičiuota, kad klasėje esant 21 mokiniui, jau galima formuoti mokinių grupes daugumai pasirinktų dalykų mokytis III–IV kl. Jei mokinių baigiamosiose klasėse mažai, nesusiformuoja grupės mokytis norimų dalykų ir pasirengti mažiau populiariems, pvz., fizikos, chemijos, biologijos valstybiniams brandos egzaminams. Tokiose mokyklose visų pirma nukenčia mokiniai, nes apribojamas jų pasirinkimas, o kartu ir ateities perspektyvos. Tai socialiai neteisinga jų atžvilgiu, nes nesudaromos lygios galimybės gauti kokybišką ugdymą mažesniuose miesteliuose ar kaimuose gyvenantiems mokiniams.
