Balandžio 4–5 dienomis užsienio reikalų ministras Gabrielius Landsbergis dalyvavo NATO užsienio reikalų ministrų susitikime Briuselyje.
„Šis NATO ministrų susitikimas teikia vilties, kad Aljansas sugebės susitarti dėl kelio Ukrainos narystės Aljanse link. Ukrainos ambicija yra aiški – narystė NATO, kai sąlygos tą leis. Mūsų visų pareiga rasti tinkamiausius politinius instrumentus, kad dar 2008 metais Ukrainai pravertų narystės durų link nusitiestų aiškus kelias”, – pasibaigus susitikimui sakė diplomatijos vadovas.
NATO-Ukrainos komisijos posėdyje dalyvavęs Ukrainos užsienio reikalų ministras Dmytro Kuleba darkart patvirtino Ukrainos ambiciją – narystę NATO – bei išreiškė viltį, kad būtent Vilniuje vyksiančiame NATO viršūnių susitikime bus įvardinti žingsniai, reikšmingai priartinsiantys Ukrainą narystės link.
Užsienio reikalų ministras G. Landsbergis susitiko su Vyriausiuoju sąjungininkų pajėgų Europoje vadu generolu Christopher G. Cavoli.
„Artėjant NATO viršūnių susitikimui Vilniuje, kartu su generolu aptarėme tai, kad Rusija išlieka ilgalaike grėsme ne tik Lietuvai, bet ir visam Aljansui, ir jai atremti reikalingas įvairiapusių priemonių rinkinys“, – po susitikimo pažymėjo Lietuvos diplomatijos vadovas.
Sąjungininkų sesijoje, kurioje dalyvavo ir Švedija, NATO užsienio reikalų ministrai diskutavo apie NATO viršūnių susitikimo Vilniuje tikslus, ilgalaikę Aljanso praktinę ir politinę paramą Ukrainai, progresą įgyvendinant Madride pasiektus susitarimus bei Kinijos keliamus iššūkius.
Sesijoje su Indijos ir Ramiojo vandenynų regiono partneriais ir Europos Sąjungos vyriausiuoju įgaliotiniu užsienio ir saugumo politikai Josepu Borrelliu ministrai aptarė Rusijos bei Kinijos grėsmes bei būtinus veiksmus stiprinant Aljanso ir sąjungininkų gebėjimus šias grėsmes atremti.
Tai buvo pirmasis NATO šalių užsienio reikalų ministrų susitikimas dalyvaujant Suomijai – jau pilnateisei 31-ai Aljanso narei.
