Liepos 18 dieną užsienio reikalų viceministrė Jovita Neliupšienė už tvirtą paramą Ukrainai ir Moldovai įteikė „Lietuvos diplomatijos žvaigždę“ Europos Komisijos humanitarinės pagalbos ir civilinės saugos generalinio direktorato (DG ECHO) generaliniam direktoriui Maciejui Popowskui.
„Kuomet mūsų kontinente vyksta karas, nėra laiko svyravimams ar abejonėms priimant svarbius sprendimus“, – teigė viceministrė, įvertindama M. Popowskio indėlį 2022 metais suteikiant Europos Sąjungos (ES) kandidačių statusą Ukrainai ir Moldovai.
Užsienio reikalų ministerijoje surengtos apdovanojimo ceremonijos metu viceministrė padėkojo M. Popowskiui už jo asmenines pastangas užtikrinant visapusišką ES ir kitų tarptautinių donorų paramą Ukrainai, taip pat Moldovai, kovojančiai su ekonominiais iššūkiais ir hibridinėmis grėsmėmis, bei ilgametę bendrą paramą stiprinant ES Rytų kaimynystės šalių saugumą ir gerovę.
Nuo šių metų kovo 1 dienos M. Popowskis paskirtas į pareigas Europos Komisijos Europos civilinės saugos ir humanitarinės pagalbos operacijų generalinio direktorato (DG ECHO) direktoriaus pareigas. Nuo 2016 metų M. Popowskis buvo Europos Komisijos Kaimynystės ir plėtros derybų generalinio direktorato (DG NEAR) direktoriaus pavaduotojas, o pastaruosius trejus metus (2020–2023 m.) laikinai ėjo ir Generalinio direktoriaus pareigas. M. Popowskiui vadovaujant DG NEAR buvo skiriamas ypatingas dėmesys ES paramai Rytų kaimynystės šalims, įskaitant Asociacijos susitarimų su Ukraina, Moldova ir Sakartvelu įgyvendinimą, Rytų partnerystės politikos stiprinimą, paramą europinėms reformoms ir šių šalių suartėjimui su ES.
„Lietuvos diplomatijos žvaigždė“ − tai Užsienio reikalų ministerijos garbės ženklas, nuo 2010 metų užsienio reikalų ministro skiriamas už Lietuvos garsinimą užsienyje ir tarpvalstybinių santykių puoselėjimą.
