Birželio 26 dieną Lietuvos Respublikos nepaprastasis ir įgaliotasis ambasadorius Japonijoje Aurelijus Zykas lituanistei dr. Eiko Sakurai įteikė ordino „Už nuopelnus Lietuvai“ Karininko kryžių.
Dr. Eiko Sakurai yra ilgametė lietuvių kalbos ir kultūros propaguotoja Japonijoje, mokslinių publikacijų, knygų apie Lietuvą ir lietuvių kalbos vadovėlių autorė bei sudarytoja, lietuvių kalbos dėstytoja ir vertėja iš lietuvių kalbos. Šiuo metu ji vienintelė profesionali lituanistė, dėstanti Japonijos aukštosiose mokyklose – Tokijo užsienio studijų universitete ir Osakos universitete. Jos mokslinių tyrinėjimų sritis yra lietuvių kalba.
1997 metais Eiko Sakurai pradėjo dėstyti lietuvių kalbą Nagojos universitete, kur buvo įkurta pirmoji Japonijoje lituanistikos studijų katedra. Vėliau ji pratęsė pedagoginį darbą Osakos universitete ir Tokijo užsienio studijų universitete. Jos dėka lietuvių kalba Osakoje dėstoma virš 20 metų, o Tokijuje – virš 10 metų. Eiko Sakurai pastangomis lietuvių kalba yra vienintelė Baltijos valstybių kalba, įtraukta į Japonijos aukštųjų mokyklų mokymo programas.
Svarbus E. Sakurai indėlis į Lietuvos, lietuvių kultūros ir kalbos populiarinimą Japonijoje yra jos publikacijos japonų kalba, tarp kurių išskirtini du lietuvių kalbos vadovėliai, išleisti 2007 ir 2019 metais leidykloje „Hakusuisha“ bei plačiajam skaitytojų ratui skirta knyga „60 straipsnių Lietuvai pažinti“
Taip pat E. Sakurai yra knygos „Akashishoten“ ( išleistos 2020 m.), visapusiškai pristatančios Lietuvą, iniciatorė, sudarytoja ir didelės dalies straipsnių autorė.
Eiko Sakurai dėka užmegzti ir puoselėjami ryšiai tarp Lietuvos ir Japonijos akademinių institucijų, sudaryta akademinių mainų sutartis tarp Tokijo užsienio studijų universiteto ir Vytauto Didžiojo universiteto, šiuo metu rengiama sutartis su Vilniaus universitetu.
E. Sakurai aktyviai prisideda prie Lietuvos kultūros ir meno sklaidos Japonijoje.
Lietuvos Respublikos ambasadoje Tokijuje vykusioje dr. Eiko Sakurai apdovanojimo ceremonijoje sveikinimo kalbas tarė jos ilgamečiai kolegos Tokijo užsienio studijų universiteto profesorė emeritė Keiko Numano ir Sophia universiteto profesorius Goro Christoph Kimura. Iškilmėse dalyvavo Lietuvos generalinis garbės konsulas Shigehiro Komaru, garbės konsulas Takeshi Okawara, buvusi Japonijos ambasadorė Lietuvoje Kazuko Shiraishi, akademinės bendruomenės nariai, studentai ir artimieji.
