Gruodžio 13 dieną Užsienio reikalų ministerija (URM) ir Stanfordo universitetas pasirašė dvišalį memorandumą, žymintį ryšių su vienu iškiliausių JAV ir pasaulio universitetų bei akademinės minties centrų stiprinimo pradžią. Memorandumą URM vardu pasirašė Lietuvos ambasadorė Jungtinėse Amerikos Valstijose (JAV) Audra Plepytė.
Memorandumas atveria kelią pasirašyti susitarimus dėl Lietuvos akademinės visuomenės atstovų ir Stanfordo universitetų dėstytojų, mokslininkų, doktorantų abipusių vizitų ir stažuočių, gilinant Lietuvos ir Baltijos regiono tyrimus, taip pat bendrų paskaitų, seminarų ir kitų renginių. Ketinama didinti galimybes Lietuvos mokslininkams ir studentams gauti Stanfordo universiteto stipendijas moksliniams tyrimams ir bendriems projektams su Stanfordo universiteto akademine bendruomene.
„Bendradarbiavimas su vienu stipriausių JAV universitetų atveria naujų galimybių Lietuvos ir JAV akademiniams mainams ir prisideda prie Lietuvos užsienio politikos tikslų įgyvendinimo, gilinant JAV žinias apie Lietuvą, jos užsienio politiką ir regiono geopolitinę padėtį. Tai – svarbus impulsas Lietuvos ir JAV strateginės partnerystės stiprinimui“, – sakė užsienio reikalų ministras Gabrielius Landsbergis.
JAV Kalifornijos valstijoje, netoli San Fransisko, esantis Stanfordo universitetas įkurtas 1885 metais, šiuo metu turi daugiau kaip 17 tūkstančių studentų bei daugiau kaip 2 tūkstančius dėstytojų. Pastaraisiais dešimtmečiais universitetas nuolat yra tarp pirmaujančių pasaulyje pagal tarptautinius universitetų reitingus. Su Stanfordo universitetu susiję 58 Nobelio premijos laureatai.
