Šiandien, lapkričio 29 d., kasmetinės Cheminio ginklo konvencijos valstybių narių konferencijos metu, vyko rinkimai į Cheminio ginklo uždraudimo organizacijos (OPCW) Vykdomąją tarybą 2024–2026 m. laikotarpiui. Pirmą kartą organizacijos istorijoje į Vykdomąją tarybą neišrinkta Rusija, dauguma parėmė Lietuvos, Lenkijos ir Ukrainos kandidatūras.
Balsavimo rezultatai patvirtina daugumos OPCW šalių poziciją, kad karinė agresija prieš kitą tos pačios organizacijos narę Ukrainą bei Cheminio ginklo konvencijos pažeidimai negali būti suderinami su pareigomis tarptautinėse institucijose ir mestų šešėlį visos organizacijos patikimumui.
„Atėjo laikas kiekvienai tarptautinei organizacijai apsivalyti, kad išlaikytų savo aktualumą ir patikimumą“ – komentuodamas balsavimo rezultatus, sakė Užsienio reikalų ministras G. Landsbergis.
Tapus Vykdomosios tarybos nare, Lietuva galės tiesiogiai ir aktyviai remti bendraminčių ir Lietuvos interesus atitinkančią poziciją šioje organizacijoje. Taip pat Lietuva toliau nuosekliai sieks atkreipti tarptautinės bendruomenės dėmesį į Baltijos ir kitose jūrose paskandintus cheminius ginklus, skatins bendradarbiavimą ir keitimąsi informacija šiuo klausimu. Lietuvos dalyvavimas Vykdomosios tarybos veikloje prisidės prie aktyvios ir atsakingos tarptautinės bendruomenės narės įvaizdžio stiprinimo. Lietuva jau buvo Vykdomosios tarybos nare 2020–2022 m. laikotarpiu.
Cheminio ginklo uždraudimo organizacija prižiūri Cheminio ginklo konvencijos įgyvendinimą, kuri buvo priimta 1997 metais. Konvencijos tikslas – siekti visų cheminių ginklų sunaikinimo. Konvencijai priklauso 193 valstybės narės. Vykdomoji taryba yra viena svarbiausių OPCW institucijų, rengianti ir svarstanti svarbiausius organizacijos sprendimus. Jai priklauso 41 valstybė.
