Gruodžio 13 dieną užsienio reikalų viceministras Egidijus Meilūnas su darbo vizitu lankėsi Jungtinėse Tautose (JT) Niujorke, kur su aukštais JT pareigūnais aptarė Rusijos karinę agresiją prieš Ukrainą bei JT iniciatyvas, padedančias įveikti karo pasekmes, įskaitant humanitarinę paramą. Taip pat aptarti JT reformos, pagarbos JT Chartijai ir žmogaus teisėms bei daugiašališkumo stiprinimo klausimai.
Viceministro susitikimo su JAV ambasadore JT Linda Thomas-Greenfield metu patvirtinta stipri ir tęstinė JAV ir Lietuvos parama Ukrainai. Taip pat aptarta padėtis Artimuosiuose Rytuose, JT Saugumo Tarybos reforma bei JAV iniciatyva, skirta dirbtinio intelekto reglamentavimui.
Vizito metu E. Meilūnas taip pat susitiko su JT Generalinio Sekretoriaus (GS) pavaduotoju politikai Guy Bernard Ryder, JT GS pavaduotoju taikos palaikymo klausimams Jean-Pierre Lacroix bei spec. įgaliotinės nusiginklavimui pavaduotoju Adedeji Ebo. Visų susitikimų metu viceministras pabrėžė, kad Vidurio Rytuose atsinaujinęs konfliktas yra ypač naudingas Rusijai, kuri siekia, jog pasaulio dėmesys būtų atitrauktas nuo Ukrainos.
„Rusijos agresijos prieš Ukrainą klausimas privalo išlikti tarp esminių Jungtinių Tautų prioritetų. Jei Rusija Ukrainoje nebus sustabdyta, pasekmės visai demokratinei bendrijai bus tragiškos“, – sakė viceministras.
Pokalbių su aukštais JT pareigūnais metu viceministras akcentavo, kad Rusija vis dažniau piktnaudžiauja veto teise ir verčia JT Saugumo Tarybą savo įkaite, todėl privalu sparčiau ieškoti būdų, kaip reformuoti JT sistemą bei didinti JT Generalinės Asamblėjos vaidmenį. Viceministras taip pat aptarė pasirengimą 2024 m. rugsėjo mėn. numatytam pasaulio lyderių susitikimui dėl ateities, kurio metu bus priimtas vadinamasis „Susitarimas dėl ateities“.
„Pasisakome už tai, kad „Susitarimas dėl ateities“ būtų ne vien įsipareigojimų laikytis JT Chartijos ir galiojančių tarptautinių normų pakartojimas – jame turi būti įvardytos aiškios permainų gairės sustiprinant JT gebėjimą atliepti dabartinius iššūkius ir didinant visuomenės paramą JT veiklai“, – akcentavo viceministras.
