Šiandien mirus Lietuvių kalbos ir kultūros centro prie Tbilisio technikos universiteto vadovui, profesoriui Vidui Kavaliauskui (1965–2023) švietimo, mokslo ir sporto ministrė reiškia užuojautą jo artimiesiems.
„Mus paliko Lietuvos patriotas ir lietuvių kalbos puoselėtojas, nuoširdus ir didžios širdies žmogus. Jam turime būti dėkingi ir už nuoširdžių santykių tarp dviejų šalių puoselėjimą“, – pažymi ministrė J. Šiugždinienė.
Kalbininko įkurtas centras vienija visus Sakartvele gyvenančius lietuvius. Jame Sakartvelo aukštųjų mokyklų studentai gali mokytis lietuvių kalbos nemokamai (centro veiklą remia Švietimo, mokslo ir švietimo ministerija).
V. Kavaliauskas, Vilniaus pedagoginio universiteto absolventas ir dėstytojas, Sakartvelo technikos universiteto Lietuvių kalbos ir kultūros centre pradėjo dirbti 2012 m. Kasmet centras pritraukia vis daugiau studentų kartvelų, kurie mokosi lietuvių kalbos. V. Kavaliausko studentai ne tik lietuviškai gieda Lietuvos himną, dainuoja dainas, bet ir dalyvauja tarptautinėse mokslinėse konferencijose, skirtose baltų kalboms, rengia bakalauro darbus apie Lietuvos ir Sakartvelo santykius.
V. Kavaliauskas yra apdovanotas Lietuvos Vyriausybės, Seimo, ministerijos padėkomis, o 2015 m. jam suteiktas Sakartvelo technikos universiteto garbės daktaro vardas.
Profesorius yra 15 mokslinių ir metodinių knygų autorius arba bendraautoris, paskelbęs daugiau kaip 50 mokslinių ir metodinių straipsnių lietuvių, anglų, vokiečių, rusų, uzbekų, gruzinų, kartvelų, rumunų kalbomis, Visuotinėje lietuvių enciklopedijoje publikavęs daugiau kaip 250 straipsnių apie pasaulio kalbas.
2017 m. pirmoji Švietimo ir mokslo ministerijos lituanistinio švietimo mokytojui (dėstytojui), dirbančiam ne Lietuvoje, skirta premija teko prof. V. Kavaliauskui. Jis įvertintas už sėkmingą lietuvių kalbos propagavimą Sakartvele, abiejų šalių kultūrinių ryšių plėtrą, akademinius darbus.
