Švietimo, mokslo ir sporto ministerija pritaria ir skatina spartesnį švietimo tarybų steigimąsi savivaldybėse. Švietimo tarybos, kaip visuomeninė organizacija, gali labai sėkmingai padėti spręsti vietos bendruomenėms svarbius švietimo klausimus, pvz., mokyklų tinklo, mokyklų aplinkos gerinimo ir pan.
Lietuvos moksleivių sąjungos Valdybos nariui Ignui Janeliūnui Panevėžio miesto savivaldybės Švietimo taryboje teko darbuotis dvejus metus. „Per tą laiką narystė šioje miesto tarybos patariamojoje organizacijoje svariai prisidėjo ne tik prie mokinių, kaip pagrindinės švietimo sistemos grandies, sėkmingo ir kokybiškesnio nei įprastai atstovavimo, – taip pat įgijau daugiau asmeninių žinių ir naudingos patirties. Puikiai pamenu ir be galo džiaugiuosi, jog kartu su LMS vykdant neformaliojo vaikų švietimo, mokinių poreikių analizės ir kitas apklausas šių apklausų rezultatai buvo vertingi ir naudingi Švietimo tarybos darbui. Jais buvo remiamasi ne tik per diskusijas Švietimo tarybos posėdžiuose, tačiau ir argumentuojami tarybai teikiami nauji siūlymai. Lietuvos moksleivių sąjunga yra įsitikinusi, jog švietimo tarybų steigimas pradėtų keisti įsisenėjusį požiūrį į realias galimybes kurti ir keisti švietimo sistemą. Tai prisidėtų prie kokybiškesnio švietimo politikos įgyvendinimo regionuose. Švietimo tarybų steigimas ne tik prisidėtų prie demokratijos ir įtraukumo principų puoselėjimo, bet ir sudarytų galimybes visiems švietimo sistemos dalyviams diskutuoti, teikti siūlymus opiausiais regiono švietimo klausimais“, – sako Ignas Janeliūnas.
Švietimo įstatyme įteisinta, kad, formuojant savivaldybės švietimo politiką, į tai gali būti įtraukiama visuomenė steigiant švietimo ir atskirų švietimo sričių tarybas. Į savivaldybės švietimo tarybą įeina mokiniai, mokytojai, tėvai, socialiniai partneriai, švietimo teikėjai ar jų asociacijos. Dalyvavimas švietimo taryboje leidžia į švietimo aktualijas pažvelgti įvairiapusiškiau, geriau atliepti aprėpti mokinių, tėvų, pedagogų bendruomenės interesus.
Savivaldybės švietimo tarybos nuostatus tvirtina savivaldybės taryba. Švietimo taryba analizuoja, kaip vykdoma bendroji švietimo politika, pritaria švietimo politikos strateginius tikslus ir pažangos uždavinius įgyvendinančioms priemonėms ar projektams, telkia visuomenę jiems siekti.
Šiuo metu tik keliose savivaldybėse iš 60 yra įsteigtos švietimo tarybos.
