Gegužės 15 dieną Lietuvos nepaprastasis ir įgaliotasis ambasadorius Ramūnas Davidonis įteikė skiriamuosius raštus Irako Prezidentui dr. Abdului Latifui Rašidui.
Ceremonijos metu ambasadorius R. Davidonis pasidžiaugė stiprėjančiu dvišaliu bendradarbiavimu tarp Lietuvos ir Irako. „Toliau plėsime politinį ir ekonominį bendradarbiavimą su viena įtakingiausių regiono valstybių – Iraku, ypač stiprinsime bendras pastangas kovoje su nelegalia migracija“, – sakė ambasadorius.
Gegužės 14 dieną ambasadorius R. Davidonis įteikė skiriamųjų raštų kopijas Irako užsienio reikalų ministrui Fuadui Husseinui, kurį ambasadorius pakvietė su oficialiu vizitu apsilankyti Lietuvoje. Susitikimo metu aptartas dvišalis politinis ir ekonominis bendradarbiavimas, bendros Lietuvos ir Irako pastangos užkirsti kelią nelegaliai migracijai.
R. Davidonis yra pirmasis Lietuvos ambasadorius Irakui. 1992 metų sausio 2 dieną Irakas pripažino atkurtą nepriklausomą Lietuvos valstybę. 2006 metų sausio 24 dieną užmegzti diplomatiniai Lietuvos ir Irako santykiai.
