Spalio 5 dieną užsienio reikalų viceministras Egidijus Meilūnas ministerijoje susitiko su pirmąja Lietuvoje reziduojančia Kanados ambasadore Jeanette Sautner. Susitikimo metu viceministras pasidžiaugė naujai atidaryta Kanados ambasada Vilniuje, pabrėždamas šio sprendimo svarbą Lietuvos ir Kanados dvišalių santykių stiprinimui.
„Kanados ambasados atidarymas ir ambasadorės, reziduojančios Lietuvoje, paskyrimas yra svarbus žingsnis, žymintis naujo etapo Lietuvos ir Kanados dvišaliuose santykiuose pradžią. Mūsų valstybes sieja bendras įsipareigojimas demokratinėms vertybėms ir transatlantinio ryšio stiprinimui, todėl šis istorinis sprendimas sukurs puikias galimybes toliau stiprinti dvišalį bendradarbiavimą įvairiose srityse“, – kalbėjo E. Meilūnas.
Susitikime viceministras padėkojo Kanadai už reikšmingą indėlį stiprinant mūsų regiono saugumą ir teikiamą paramą Ukrainai. Pokalbio metu taip pat aptarti saugumo situacijos regione ir tolesnės paramos Ukrainai klausimai, pabrėžtas siekis plėsti Lietuvos ir Kanados bendradarbiavimą saugumo srityje, vystyti ekonominius, prekybos ir kultūros ryšius, stiprinti partnerystę Indijos-Ramiojo vandenynų regione.
Kanados ambasada Lietuvoje atidaryta liepos 10 d., apie tai paskelbė NATO viršūnių susitikime Vilniuje viešėjęs Kanados premjeras Justinas Trudeau. Iki tol veikė Kanados ambasados biuras, o Kanados ambasadorius Lietuvai rezidavo Rygoje.
