Šiandien, liepos 19 dieną, Vašingtono aikštėje, Vilniuje, bus minimos Sumnerio Welleso deklaracijos 83–iosios metinės. Ši šventė – tai padėka JAV, artimai Lietuvos sąjungininkei ir partnerei, už okupacijos nepripažinimo politiką.
1940 metų liepos 23 dieną JAV valstybės sekretoriaus pareigas ėjęs Benjamin Sumner Welles paskelbė deklaraciją, kurioje buvo įtvirtinta Jungtinių Amerikos Valstijų neigiama nuostata dėl Baltijos šalių prievartinio inkorporavimo į Sovietų Sąjungą.
„Sumnerio Welleso deklaracijos minėjimas jau tapo tradicija kasmet, liepos mėnesį, mums susirinkti Vašingtono aikštėje, kuri tapo Lietuvos ir JAV tikėjimo laisve bei abiejų tautų draugystės simboliu“, – kviesdamas atvykti į Draugystės pikniką Vašingtono aikštėje, pažymėjo užsienio reikalų viceministras Egidijus Meilūnas.
Renginys vyks šiandien, liepos 19 dieną, nuo 17:00 valandos. Švęsime klausydamiesi JAV karinių jūrų pajėgų Europoje ir Afrikoje grupės, grosiančios įvairių žanrų geriausią amerikietišką muziką, žaisdami lauko žaidimus ir skanaudami amerikietišką maistą iš maisto vagonėlių.
