Kovo 30 dieną ambasadorius Eitvydas Bajarūnas įteikė skiriamuosius raštus Portugalijos prezidentui Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa ir oficialiai tapo Lietuvos Respublikos nepaprastuoju ir įgaliotuoju ambasadoriumi Portugalijoje.
Vizito Portugalijoje metu ambasadorius Bajarūnas susitiko su Portugalijos URM generaliniu sekretoriumi Francisco Ribeiro Telles, Užsienio politikos generaliniu direktoriumi ambasadoriumi Rui Vinhas, Lietuvos Respublikos garbės konsulais ir lietuvių bendruomenės Portugalijoje atstovais.
Nuo pat diplomatinių santykių užmezgimo Lietuvos ir Portugalijos santykiai buvo grindžiami geranoriškumu ir tarpusavio supratimu bendradarbiaujant tarptautiniu lygiu. Būdama Lietuvos sąjungininke Šiaurės Atlanto sutarties organizacijoje, Portugalija reikšmingai prisideda prie Baltijos regiono saugumo užtikrinimo – nuo 2015 m. į Lietuvą siunčia rotacines karines pajėgas bei techniką, taip pat vykdo oro policijos misiją Baltijos šalyse.
Š.m. gegužės 3 d. minėsime diplomatinių santykių su Portugalija užmezgimo/atkūrimo šimtmetį. 1991 m. rugpjūčio 26 d. Portugalija pripažino atkurtą nepriklausomą Lietuvos valstybę de jure, o 1991 m. spalio 4 d. buvo atkurti diplomatiniai santykiai.
