Jo tikslas – padėti švietimo bendruomenei priimti ir ugdyti įvairių ugdymosi poreikių turinčius vaikus, ugdymą grįsti įtraukiojo ugdymo kultūra ir praktika.
Centro darbuotojai jau teikia metodinę pagalbą savivaldybių pedagoginių psichologinių tarnybų, švietimo pagalbos tarnybų, regioninių specialiojo ugdymo centrų specialistams, taip pat ugdymo įstaigoms ir pedagogams, rengia metodinę medžiagą dėl mokyklų aplinkos ir ugdymo pritaikymo įvairių ugdymosi poreikių turintiems mokiniams, ateityje teiks ir kitus įtraukųjį ugdymą gerinančius sprendimus ir padės mokykloms juos įgyvendinti.
Lietuvos įtraukties švietime centrui vadovauja Sandra Valantiejienė – socialinė pedagogė, daugelio metodinių leidinių ir mokslinių publikacijų autorė, pirmosios lietuviškos psichoaktyvių medžiagų vartojimo prevencinės programos „Savu keliu“ idėjos autorė.
Švietimo įstatyme numatyta, kad nuo 2024 m. rugsėjo visos bendrojo ugdymo mokyklos ir darželiai turės priimti specialiųjų poreikių vaikus, jei jų tėvai, pasitarę su specialistais, nuspręs, kad lankyti bendrojo ugdymo įstaigą jų vaikui yra geriausia. Nors jau dabar daugiau kaip 90 proc. visų specialiųjų ugdymosi poreikių turinčių vaikų mokosi bendrose klasėse ir grupėse su bendraamžiais, valstybė skiria daug dėmesio ir lėšų stiprindama pagalbą mokykloms, mokytojams, švietimo pagalbos specialistams siekiant dar plačiau ir sėkmingiau taikyti įtraukties principus Lietuvos švietime.
